How Was Your Ride Today? MONTH of SEPTEMBER 2018

Hey ya'll... September... "turning the corner" for sure as suddenly temps are dipping, leaves are falling, casual commuters are quickly dissapearing leaving the more hard cores, and people are as usual needing reminders about actually using lights....  

Lights being especially useful now when navigating the plethora of detours through darker paths or when sharing roadways with vehicles.  Not so mention during those first 15-20 mins when the sun is barely above the horizon and vehicle drivers can't always see the smaller cyclist (as compared to a vehicle).

Any predictions for...

- first complaint about no lights?  (oh, already done above)

- first complaint about too much light

- first snow / ice storm

- when Crowchild underpass will actually be open?

- when north side Bow will actually be fully open?

 

rant on poeple, rant on...

Was +1 out by the time I got to the office this morning... a bit chilly for shorts and fingerless gloves.  Looks warmer the next couple of days! Cool

Yah its' these fall days where you can't decide if full gloves or even warm gloves are needed, but are packing fingerless for the afternoon commute.  Too many layers... or suffer the freezies... or pack way too much stuff home.

good news

Have you noticed that the city is re-doing the path in front of the old CBC building? They removed all the trees there and seem to be building one very wide path. Wonder if it will be like the path under the Louise Bridge i.e. half pedestrian and half cyclists?

And the way they are chewing up the path just west of Crowchild, they will have to repave it (finally!)

high hopes

I have high hopes for that entire area actually (the areas east and west of Crowchild underpass)  This is a great opportunity to fix and improve that whole section.  A section that sees considerable traffic and has a couple of awkward pinch points.  

It's been so long since I've been able to access Crowchild underpass however, that I can't totally remember how it was so when they evenutally get it done I will be overjoyed.  The entire operation is adding almost an hour (round trip) to my already a little too long commute!

I'm using Bow river pathway southside currently (crossing at Edworthy) but it is VERY busy (even to the point of being a little unsafe).  The pathway is in quite poor condition in places and once the snow falls it will probably get alot messier. :(

Riding in this morning and

Riding in this morning and once I got to 17th Ave. SW (northbound on 5 Street), I started smelling this nasty smell.  I saw some brown gunk on the road, and at first I thought a garbage truck spilled something gross accidentally..  but then it kept going and going and going..  until I finally realized it must be that chemical de-icing compound the city puts down.  It STINKS!  I don't remember ever seeing that stuff last year... is it something new, or maybe I'm just forgetting?  Thoughts?

Was a nice morning to ride in.  Way home was a stiff north wind.  Glad to take the e-bike today!

Threats of rain has chased me

Threats of rain has chased me back to the little hybrid bike with fenders. Such a comfortable little bike. Weather has been rather comfortable too all considering. 

Really looking forward to hearing from you e-bike users how they do in the winter. If you use them.

E-bike in winter

I've been fighting a cold all week so haven't pedaled in at all this week - tomorrow will be the first day.

I am planning to put studded tires on my e-bike and take it in winter as much as possible.  My main concern will be the salt destroying the drivetrain.

14th St

Does anyone know what's happening on 14St W just south of the river?

There's been a crew digging there on the MUP that connects to Millenium park for about a week now (that I've noticed), and the east side sidewalk that I use seems to be periodically closed, though not very effectively as I've ridden through there a couple times when I think it was closed, but I didn't even realize it until I was exiting the construction zone.

I thought that maybe they were there to fix the dangerous crumbling sidewalk that goes under 9th Ave (all the dangerous parts have been painted white as they do before repairing potholes etc), but so far they're doing something else entirely.

Just curious if anyone here has already asked the City, and might be able to share.

The link doesn't work, but no, I'm talking about the east sidewalk of 14th St between the river and 10th Ave, not anything next to the sunalta train station.

I'll be the first...

...to complain about too much light.  Can we agree on a univsersal hand signal for "YOUR 10,000 LUMEN STROBE LIGHT IS NOT NECESSARY ON THE PATHWAY"???  Ah well, minor grievances.  I do however need to get my dynamo hub mounted back up for the coming darkness, as I will soon be called out for being that Ninja styled arsehole with no front light.

We moved a month ago, so I am discovering new routes now.  We moved out to the country east of the city, so I am driving in and riding from around 16th Ave/Barlow area. I can foresee that long gradual hill in that area of the pedestrian overpass over Deerfoot becoming a death trap when it gets icy.

Not enough light...

I experienced a new kind of driver complaint today. Stopped at a red light I had a motorist kindly suggest I need to get some lights because he couldn't see me. He was polite, and seemed genuinely concerned.

I was also concerned. I was wearing a bright orange jacket, and the sun was already well above the horizon (to the point most cycling lights would not have been noticeable), and if he couldn't see me in those conditions, I don't think he'd see me regardless of lighting levels.... 

At least it was a reminder I need to check my lights now before I do need them. I'm lucky enough to come in later so it's not come up for me yet.

Nopedy Nope

On the south side of the Crowchild underpass it's still pretty rough dirt at the bridge... at least what I could see from the bypass route.  Doesn't look like anything will be done soon either. 

With cold snow and freezing temps I'm getting quite concerned about the south side MUP actually getting any service, clearing, or love from the city or industrious citizens.  So much water flowing across the pathway it's sure to ice up each morning any day now sending riders flying.

There were closure signs

I took the south side today, haven't in a month, and noted there are path closure signs there I don't recall seeing before.

I didn't stop to look at them, but I thought I caught the words "seasonal closure" so I think they're there to tell everyone to switch to the north side and that horrible detour at crowchild.

I have so say, sitting still for 3 minutes in the dead of winter waiting for the lights to change at crowchild could be dangerous when you have to keep moving to keep warm.

the asphalt path from 24 ST

the asphalt path from 24 ST down the hill to the RR crossing has been a luge run for years.  Usually it does get cleared of snow within a day or so, but the quality of the work varies considerably from year to year.  Last winter it was quite bad and would take up to a week to get any clearing at all.  The ice build up has been a familiar theme for a L O N G time.  Sometimes they dump some pickle or grit or salt-like compound on it, and your drive train becomes a frozen mess.

Quarry Road Trail is not cleared, and is packed snow (which can become ice) and is always very bumpy.

when I rode through this morning at 0700, the detour at the pillar where they have been working, was still in effect.  Ped bridge closed.

path on the north side is still closed

To the east and west of Crowchild so opening the pedestrian bridge under Crowchild doesn't do much good. And now I see the "mid-October" opening of the north-side path has been delayed another month. I was hoping they would at least open the part from 14th St. to the pedestrian bridge over Memorial just so we can avoid that rough Broadview Road. Noticed yesterday on the ride home that they were tearing up that slim pedestrian path west of 14th St. - wonder what they plan to do here i.e. keep seperate pedestrian/cycle paths as in the past or create a shared path?

Crowchild ped bridge etc

Yesterday I went for a ride in that area to check out what is open, or not.

The 21st St. ped bridge was still barricaded, but the construction fencing and concrete barriers were gone from the pathway from there to 14st, and there is fresh paving and lines painted, so depending on cleanup etc, it could be open quite soon.

Crowchild Tr ped bridge was still barricaded and fenced off, not sure status of the north pathway to 29st.

I rode by the Memorial Dr. pedestrian overpass this morning using the new path the city put in between there and Crowchild and noticed that some of the barricades have been pushed aside a bit so I am wondering if people are starting to "unofficially" use the path down to 14th St.  The barricade is still intact just west of the 14th St. underpass, however.

5th avenue

because the ped bridge wasn't cleared yet I rode 5th this morning and while a car was passing on my left I had to jump a snow pile in the middle of the bike lane...

 

River path - when I looked on Sunday - the narrow pathway section has been painted with peds and bikes separated, but, likely when it's snowy the ped path won't be cleared so the doggy walkers and packs of joggers will be on the bike path.

 

Edit: today saw the narrow-est section (just east of the ped bridge) is still shared, not enough room between the road and river bank to separate.

great news

Just wondering, do they still have the two seperate paths for cyclists and pedestrians or is it one path now? Always thought that ped. path was way too narrow for the number of people who walk/jog along there.

There can only be one

On that section just west of 14th Street heading west, yes the new narrow section is just one massive path with painted lines to designate cycling from other users.  Of course the recent snowfall and marginal plowing was only wide enough for 2 passing cyclists unless someone wanted to jump the pile of snow.  ALSO... the snow seemed IMO to be preferencially cleared to the UPHILL side so of course as it melts it flows across and possible freezes.  Which explains my high anxiety riding experience Friday morning.

This area might be slowly coming together however the various city departments and contractors all get an F overall over the past 2 weeks from me for poor execution, poor scheduling, poor resourcing, poor response, poor communications, and generally DGFF.

North side river pathway

The City of Calgary site, updated September 25th, now says the pathway won't be available until further notice.  I definitely hope it will be available soon as the south side will be impassible soon as the water runoff freezes and builds up.

South Side Pathway Condition??

I rode in along 5th Ave NW around 6am today to stay in vehicle tracks, and knowing that the south side pathway from Crowchild to Edworthy would be a mess.  Does anyone know if the Southside path has been plowed, or tracked enough to be decent?  Trying to figure out the best way home....
